What's Actually in Your Shower Water in Australia?

Short answer

Australian tap water is treated to be safe to drink, but it is not pure. Almost every reticulated supply carries a disinfectant residual — free chlorine at typically 0.2–0.5 mg/L, or chloramine in cities including Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide — plus dissolved hardness minerals that range from about 5 mg/L to 380 mg/L as calcium carbonate depending on your supply zone.[1][2] Those two variables are what most people are actually reacting to when skin feels tight after a shower or hair feels rough. Neither is a contaminant problem. Both are washing variables you can change.

The three things in your shower water that matter

When people ask what is in their shower water, they usually imagine a long list of contaminants. In an Australian capital city on mains supply, the honest list is short. Three things account for almost everything you can perceive on your skin and hair:

  1. A disinfectant residual — free chlorine or chloramine, deliberately kept in the pipes to stop microbial regrowth between the treatment plant and your tap.
  2. Dissolved hardness minerals — mostly calcium and magnesium, picked up from the catchment and groundwater. This is what makes soap hard to lather and leaves film on glass.
  3. Trace everything else — sediment, pipe-derived metals, and disinfection by-products, generally at very low concentrations in compliant supplies.

The first two are the ones a shower filter is designed to interact with, and they behave very differently. It is worth understanding both before you decide whether filtering your shower is worth it.

Disinfectant: chlorine and chloramine

Australian water utilities are required to maintain a disinfectant residual throughout the distribution network. This is a public-health feature, not an accident. Without it, water sitting in kilometres of pipe would be vulnerable to microbial regrowth.

How much is actually in the water

The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, published by the NHMRC, set the health-based guideline value for total chlorine at 5 mg/L. Real supplies run far below that. The guidelines state that free chlorine residual in major Australian reticulated supplies "ranges from 0.1 mg/L to 4 mg/L, with typical concentrations in the reticulation of about 0.2 to 0.5 mg/L."[1]

That last figure is the one to hold on to. Typical Australian tap water is not heavily chlorinated. It is lightly chlorinated — and yet many people can still smell it, because the odour threshold sits at about 0.6 mg/L, and the guidelines note that "some people are particularly sensitive and can detect amounts as low as 0.2 mg/L."[1] If you can smell your shower, you are probably at the sensitive end of a normal distribution, not on the receiving end of an unusually dosed supply.

Chlorine and chloramine are not interchangeable

Some Australian utilities dose free chlorine. Others use chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia), which is more stable and holds a residual further along long distribution systems. The NHMRC sets a separate health guideline value of 3 mg/L for monochloramine.[3]

This distinction matters more than almost anything else on this page, because chloramine is significantly harder to remove than free chlorine. A filter medium that strips free chlorine in a fraction of a second may only partially reduce chloramine at the same flow rate. Any shower filter comparison that treats "chlorine" as one category is skipping the most important variable.

Hardness minerals: calcium and magnesium

Hardness is the total concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium, conventionally expressed as milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate (mg/L as CaCO₃). The NHMRC classifies it like this:[2]

The guideline value is that total hardness "should not exceed 200 mg/L," and total hardness in major Australian reticulated supplies "ranges between about 5 mg/L and about 380 mg/L."[2] That is a seventy-fold spread. Two people can have identical showerheads, identical shampoo and completely different results, purely because of where they live.

Australia is unusually variable here. Melbourne and Canberra sit at the very soft end. Perth and parts of Adelaide sit far higher. We have compiled the figures with links to each utility's own reporting in water hardness in Australian cities.

Why hardness affects washing more than you would expect

Hardness does not irritate skin directly. It changes how your cleanser behaves. Calcium and magnesium ions react with anionic surfactants — the foaming agents in most body washes and shampoos — which is why hard water needs more product to lather. The NHMRC puts it plainly: "Hard water requires more soap than soft water to obtain a lather."[2]

The consequence is that in hard water you tend to use more product, and more surfactant residue is left behind on skin after rinsing. That mechanism is the subject of some genuinely good dermatology research, which we summarise in hard water, chlorine and eczema.

Everything else: metals, sediment and by-products

Three other categories come up often. Each deserves a proportionate answer rather than either dismissal or alarm.

Sediment and particulates. Fine grit, rust and pipe scale enter water in the distribution network and in your own building's plumbing. This is usually a bigger contributor to visible discolouration than anything happening at the treatment plant, and it is the easiest thing to filter mechanically. If you have ever seen a new filter cartridge discolour within weeks, this is most of what you are looking at.

Metals. Copper and iron can be picked up from household pipework, particularly in hot water and in water that has been standing overnight. Copper is worth knowing about for a specific and slightly surprising reason involving hair colour, which we cover in why hair feels dry after showering.

Disinfection by-products. When chlorine reacts with natural organic matter it forms by-products such as trihalomethanes. These are regulated, monitored and reported by Australian utilities against the ADWG.[4] Compliant supplies sit within guideline values. We are not going to tell you that your shower is a hazard, because the published data does not support that claim.

Why a shower is different from a glass of water

You drink perhaps two litres of water a day. A single eight-minute shower at a typical Australian flow rate puts substantially more water than that across your largest organ, hot, under pressure, in combination with surfactants that are specifically designed to strip lipids.

Three things change in a shower relative to drinking:

  • Contact area. Roughly two square metres of skin, plus all of your hair, rather than a mouthful.
  • Temperature. Hot water increases lipid solubilisation. Heat alone degrades the skin barrier independently of what is dissolved in the water.
  • Surfactants. Water is rarely the only variable. It is water plus cleanser, and the interaction between the two is where most of the measurable effect lives.

That third point is the one most articles miss. The research consistently finds that water chemistry matters largely because of how it modifies the behaviour of what you wash with. Change the water and you change the cleanser's behaviour, without changing the cleanser.

How to find out what is in your water

You do not need to buy a test kit to answer this. Every major Australian utility publishes water quality data, usually by supply zone, free of charge.

Look for three numbers: total hardness (as CaCO₃), the disinfectant type (free chlorine or chloramine), and the residual concentration. Those three tell you almost everything relevant to your shower. If your building has its own storage tanks or older internal plumbing, your tap may differ from the zone average, in which case a cheap hardness test strip is a reasonable sanity check.

What this means for you

If you have read this far hoping for a verdict, here it is, split by situation.

  • Soft water, no skin complaints. Melbourne, Canberra and much of Sydney sit in soft or very soft territory. If your skin and hair are fine, water chemistry is not your problem and a filter is unlikely to be the upgrade you are looking for. Spend the money on a better cleanser.
  • Hard water, and washing feels like hard work. If you are in Perth, Adelaide or a harder Brisbane zone and you are using a lot of product to get a lather, hardness is a real and measurable variable in your bathroom. Understand, though, that a shower filter is not a water softener — this is the single most over-claimed point in the category, and we deal with it directly in how shower filters work.
  • You can smell the chlorine. Disinfectant residual is the thing shower filtration genuinely addresses well. If the smell bothers you, or your skin feels tight in a way that tracks with your water rather than your season, this is the most defensible reason to filter.
  • Sensitive or eczema-prone skin. Read the research summary before you buy anything, and talk to your GP or dermatologist. A shower filter is a comfort measure, not a treatment.

Hardness is classified as an aesthetic characteristic. Its practical effects are on lathering, scale and how much cleanser you use.

Can a shower filter soften hard water?

No. Softening means exchanging calcium and magnesium ions, which requires an ion-exchange resin and regeneration with salt. A shower filter cartridge does not do this. Shower filters address disinfectant residual, sediment and some dissolved metals. Any product claiming to soften water from an inline shower cartridge is overstating what it does.
